My Little Ponies and Friends (U.S.) (P-Z)
Year 8 (1989)

Year 8 seemed to slow down from the bustle of Year 7.  There were only about ten sets sold in Year 8, verses Year 7's sixteen sets.  Hasbro was focusing on other lines as well as the My Little Pony line.  Year 8 was the first year that the Petite My Little Ponies would be issued; also Dream Beauties would be issued.  Many sets from Year 8 would bear a striking resemblance to ponies in the past or ponies that would come from sets in the future. The Pony Bride will have a near replica to herself come out in year 10, Prom Queen and Glittery Sweetheart Sisters are continuations of the original Sweetheart Sister Ponies, Baby Sparkle Ponies were based on the same principle as adult Sparkle Ponies, the Christmas Pony Merry Treats wasn't the first Christmas Pony and the Sweetsteps Ballerinas would have babies fashioned after them the following year.  The Drink 'n Wet line was unique, featuring ponies that could drink real water from a bottle and wet from a hole in the back.  Also, the Tropical Ponies and Rainbow Curl Ponies are unique; still there were similar sets to these. You will note that this year there would be a shift in the traditional sets.  Many sets from Year 7 and before had a set of six ponies.  Now there would only be four in most of these set up until Year 10 (most of these were in sets of three). Pony Bride Click here to see the Pony Bride Mint in Package and see a complete accessories listing. The Pony Bride began an altogether new pose, several ponies in Years 9 and 10 would also share the same pose.  She is a little larger than the average pony, with a body similar to a sister pony. Her pose is unique; only a few ponies have this mold, the Princess Ponies and Colorswirl Ponies.  Her back, left hoof has an odd cut (close up shown below).

She was in the exact same mold as the Bridal Beauty, which came out in Year 10.  The Bridal Beauty is basically identical (same colors, same body, same tinsel, same pose, and same eyes) to the Pony Bride except for her a bouquet of roses.

Pony Bride
(earth pony)  is white with white hair and white tinsel in her mane and tail.  Her symbol was two purple doves holding wedding bands strung with ribbon. She has purple eyes, the color of the doves on her symbol.  She has no formal name and she was sold in the U. K.   Thanks to Inglemist for the photograph.

Prom Queen Sweetheart Sister Ponies were all ready to go to the Prom.  Each came with a ton of accessories to make themselves beautiful.  The Prom Queen Sweetheart Sister Ponies are in the traditional Sweetheart Sister mold; which they share with several other sets.  Each of these ponies have an earring in the ear and this was the last year for Sweetheart Sisters.  There is another set of Sweetheart Sisters issued in Year 8; the Glittery Sweetheart Sisters.  The following year Pretty Pony molds would replace them, which are basically the same but lack the earring.

Each sister came with a ruffle (close up pictured below), perfume bottle (close up pictured right), barrette (close up pictured below) and comb.  Thanks to Crumpet for the accessory photographs; please see the Mint in Package guide for more information on their actual accessories.

Each Prom Queen Sweetheart Sister has curly hair and a single earring.  These were not sold in the U. K.

Tropical PoniesClick here to see the Tropical Ponies Mint in Package. Tropical Ponies are the brightest ponies in Ponyland.  Each comes in brilliant tropical colors with tropical symbols.  Each pony has three bright colors in the mane and tail and has two toned eye shadow. Even though other there are several other sets of ponies that have eye shadow, this is the only U. S. set to have two toned eye shadow.  There are two earth ponies and a unicorn and a Pegasus.  No other tropical style ponies debuted until Year 8 with the exceptions of Tropical Breeze (a Flutter Pony) and Paradise (a So Soft Pony); both of these ponies have a tropical theme.  Also the second edition Rainbow Ponies seem to have tropical style hair, though they aren't tropical ponies.  So Rainbow Ponies like bright orange Flutterbye may have a tropical appearance. In Year 10, tropical style Paradise Baby Ponies were issued.  They look suspiciously like the offspring of Tropical Ponies but they do not bear the Tropical extension.  Also Sundazzle Ponies were also released in Year 10, each having a tropical theme and being in the Pretty Pony/Sweetheart Sister mold.
