My Little Ponies and Friends (U.S.)
(M-P)
Year 7 (1988)

Year 7 was Hasbro busiest year for the actual My Little Pony line (disregarding subsequent lines like Dream Beauties etc.). It was a totally innovative year for Hasbro, nearly every set this year was a totally new idea. A nice lot of baby ponies are issued this year, including a full set of adorable Baby Brother Ponies. Summer Wing Ponies became Windy Wing Ponies and find their place among collector's favorites. Also new adult lines sport a unique flare distinct to each group of ponies, Perfume Puffs have enormously puffy hair, Sparkle Ponies have sparkle filled bodies that glisten from head to toe, Merry Go Round ponies are beautiful intricately designed carousel ponies, and Candy Cane Ponies are Sweet Smelling Ponies with huge bouncing curls. Also this year brought the family sets of ponies, Loving Family Ponies, which came in sets of three: Mommy, Daddy, and Baby. This is also the third and last issue of U. S. Megan and Sundance. Megan gets an altogether new look; much like a Hasbro Moondreamer.
This will be the last "traditional" year for Hasbro, after this year you will see them experiment with various ideas that vary from the norm of the My Little Ponies line. The years that follow include Dream Beauties, Petites, and My Little Puppy, Kitty and Bunny. Also, set numbers will change from the traditional six.
Megan and Twice As Fancy
Sundance
(Third Edition)

Both Megan and Sundance are Twice as Fancy with color change streaks in
their hair. This is the last edition of Megan and Sundance to be
produced. This version of varies from the previous first
edition (regular versions) and second
edition (so soft version) sold in the U. S. and the version of Megan sold in the
U. K.
This version is easily distinguished from other sets. Firstly, the symbol
common to Sundance has now become a Twice as Fancy symbol for the new Sundance
and Megan's dress. Megan has undergone a major transformation also, no
longer bearing the standard body type for
Megan.
The color change hair is common to the Sunshine
Ponies which were also issued in Year 7. Other color change ponies include: Watercolor
Baby Sea Ponies and Sundazzle
Ponies.
Megan (Earth girl) has blonde hair and is wearing a pink and
white
dress with Sundance's symbol covering it. She has a ponytail with a bow in
it. Her streaks changed to dark
pink. Other versions of Megan: Megan (pink and white dress),
Megan (pink and purple dress), UK Megan (dress with multicolored bow
print). This Megan is unique from all other versions, her body is
different from the standard Megan mold. She more resembles a Moondreamer
(another doll that Hasbro produced). Her head is not as slender as the
earlier version, she has a more rounded face.
Twice as Fancy Sundance (earth pony) is white with pink hair with white
highlights and ringed pink hearts and dots circles covering her body. She has a
white streak that changes dark pink. Her eyes are blue. It is
very, very common for Sundance to have white and/or severely frizzy hair. Other
versions of Sundance: Sundance and So Soft Sundance.

Merry Go Round Ponies (3-dimensional decorative saddles)
Click here to see the Merry Go Round Ponies mint in the original packages!
Merry Go Round Ponies were special ponies with decorative saddles; they are like the decorative ponies that prance around on a carousel. Each is covered in beautiful colors and has intricate saddle blankets with various designs. They were the only carousel related ponies to be released in the U. S. There are six in this set, all earth ponies.
Their symbols are actually upraised, no flat, painted symbols. Each symbol consists of multiple designs (for example hearts or flowers), colors, and some even have tassels. The saddle blankets come in three different styles: Hearts and flowers saddles (Brilliant Blossoms and Tassels), flower saddles (Flower Bouquet and Sunnybunch), and the oval style saddles (Sparkler and Diamond Dreams). Also note there is a small design on the neck, it is similar to the symbol but is in a small patch across the back of the neck.
The only other U. S. sets with complete upraised saddle designs are the Secret Surprise Ponies.
Thanks to Jennifer Rhinebeck for the group photograph below. These ponies were sold in the U. K., except Sparkler and Diamond Dreams.
Brilliant Blossoms is purple with yellow hair has a pale purple,
yellow,
and white saddle. She's in Tootsie's pose.
She has light purple eyes.

Diamond Dreams is yellow with red hair and has a purple saddle with pink
hanging tassels. She's in Sweet Tooth's pose. She has lavender eyes.

Flower Bouquet is white with pink hair and has a yellow, pink, and white
floral saddle. She's in Posey's pose. She has pale blue eyes and
curly hair.

Please do not get her confused with Tossels, a Happy
Tails Pony.

Newborn Ponies are smaller than regular sized Baby
Ponies; they have unique poses that set them apart from all other baby
sets. They are not the smallest ponies however, the Teeny
Tiny Ponies are even smaller than the Newborns. There were several different sets
of Newborn Ponies.
Ironically, Newborn Twin Ponies (Year
5 and Year 6)
were made before the regular Newborn Ponies. This set is a set of six: one
unicorn, one Pegasus and four earth ponies. So there are basically three
sets of Newborn Ponies, this set and two sets of Newborn Twins. However, several
Newborn Ponies are scattered among these U. S. ponies: Slumber
Party Newborn Twins and Mail
Order Baby Sisters.
All poses of the Newborn Ponies belonged first to the Newborn Twins Ponies. Two of the four earth ponies share a standard newborn pose with the hoof slightly backward. This is the same pose that the U. K. Activity Club Babies have. One of the earth baby ponies in a squatting pose. The Pegasus is in an odd pose unique to Newborn Ponies and Newborn Twins. The unicorn is in a pose that is common to many newborn unicorns.
All of these baby ponies originally have curly hair.
Thanks to Jennifer Rhinebeck for use of the group photograph below. The Newborn Ponies were sold in the U. K.
Dangles (earth pony) is white
with
blue hair and a yellow and blue mobile. She is in Milkweed's pose; left
back foot is back slightly. She shares the same pose as Newborn Baby
Shaggy. She has pink eyes (some have a lavender tint).

Shaggy (earth pony) is blue with pink hair and a brown teddy bear standing on head. She
is in Milkweed's pose; left back foot is back slightly. She shares the
same pose as Newborn Baby Shaggy. She has pink eyes.

Squirmy (earth pony) is yellow with green hair and a green and pink snail.
Please note the strange blue green hair color. She is in Tumbleweed's
pose; all four feet flat. She doesn't have the same pose as Dangles and
Shaggy. She has aqua green eyes (same colors as hair and symbol).
![]()
Tappy (earth pony) is pink with yellow hair and two green and yellow tap
shoes.
She is standing in Toppy's pose; front legs squatting. She has yellow
eyes. Toppy and Tappy are the only two ponies to have this pose.

Wiggles (unicorn) is aqua with white hair and two pink and white worms.
She is in Newborn Twin's Sniffle's/ Newborn Twin's Shovel's pose. The two
different unicorn newborn poses are extremely similar. She has pink eyes.

Yo-Yo (Pegasus) is purple with pink hair and yellow and pink yo-yo. She
is
in Speckle's and Bunkie's newborn Pegasus pose.
It is an odd pose, in that the pony can stand easily by her back to legs.
Speckles, Bunkie and Yo-Yo are the only three U. S. ponies to have this pose.
She has yellow eyes.

Why are these ponies not called by Baby instead of their name, for example Baby Wiggles instead of Wiggles? For some reason their U. S. backcards name them without the "Baby" tag.

Each Perfume Puff Pony came with a solid colored flowers comb and a barrette.
The barrettes either depicted a bird and lily or two lilies side by side.
Perfume
Puff Ponies have puffed out hair - so sweet; And they smell like pretty flowers; they're the sweetest ponies you'll meet. -Hasbro Commercial for Perfume Puff Ponies |
Perfume Puff Ponies have very fluffy, wavy
manes and tails; this is the only set of My Little
Ponies
produced in the U. S. that have such wildly puffy hair. The manes and tails
are both intended to puff out, it's not due to frizz. Each pony has a forelock
of regular hair (not the same crimped style as the rest).
Each also has a sweet perfume smell. There were four earth ponies, one
unicorn and one Pegasus. Four of the six have perfume bottles for symbols,
the other two: a bathtub and a heart shaped pillow.
Related Ponies: Sweetberry
Ponies (smell like sweets), Sundae
Best Ponies (smell like sweets), Soda
Sipping' Ponies. Also there are the U.
K. and European Cookery
Ponies.
Sweet smelling playsets: The
Poof
'n Puff Perfume Palace was a perfume bottle-shaped playset that had an atomizer
on top. Interestingly, the Perfume Palace smells amazingly similar to the Perfume
Puff Ponies. It is possible that they used some of the same scents for
both of them.
A huge thanks to Lora for use
of the group photograph below.
Dainty Dahlia (earth pony) is lavender with pink hair and a yellow
perfume bottle symbol (with pink atomizor and pink accents). She
is in Up, Up, and Away's pose; similar to the shy pose. She has purple
eyes. Also, please note that her lavender color may fade or discolor; she may
appear a gray color. Her hair appears almost coral in the photograph, but her
hair color is closer to a medium pink. It may also fade or discolor.

Daisy Sweet (earth pony) is dark aqua with golden yellow hair and has
a white and pink perfume bottle. There is a pink heart inside the perfume
bottle, and three outside of it. Hair is prone to fading white, it's so
common that people sometimes mistake her as a variant. Her eyes are pink.
She is in Shady's pose.

Lavender Lace (Pegasus) is lavender (may almost look gray or pink to
some people) with green hair and has a large green and purple perfume bottle
symbol. She is in Dancing Butterflies pose. Her eyes are pink.
Red Roses (unicorn) is yellow with pink hair and has a tall pink and
green spritzing perfume bottle symbol (with lavender atomizer and accents).
She is in Gusty's pose and has purple eyes. Her hair seems to be less prone
to fading than some of the other ponies, many that I see have at least a light
pink color. She is a popular pony with collectors, perhaps it's the combination
of her beautiful colors and striking pose.

Sweet Suds (earth pony) is bubblegum pink with blue hair and has
a blue bathtub filled with bubbles as her symbol. She is in Tootsie's
pose and has blue eyes. She's one of the only Perfume Puff Ponies (aside from
Sweet Lily) to not have a perfume bottle symbol.

Sweet Lily (earth pony) is a peachy pink color with white hair and has
a blue and pink heart pillow symbol (pink lace trim and bow; two pink hearts
near the pillow). Pillow symbol may be mistaken for a heart-shaped
candy box. She is in Posey's pose and has blue eyes.

Playtime Brother Ponies (all boy earth ponies with movable heads)
Click
here to see the Playtime Brother Ponies mint in the original packages!
Playtime Brother Ponies have
special joints (ball and socket joint) that allow the
pony to turn its head. The body is a little larger than the head, unlike
most other ponies which are just glued at the joint. The head itself is
ball shaped on the inside, allowing it a free range of motion. They are
similar to the
Peek-a-Boo Ponies in that they both have this mechanism.

Each
Playtime Brother has little freckles on each cheek of his face and across his
forehead (close up
pictured above). They also have feathered feet like their Big
Brother Ponies.
Baby Countdown is dark pink with blue hair and blue and white rocket ship.
He
wears a blue and white striped bandana. He has green eyes.

Baby Drummer is dark blue with peach hair and drum symbol. He has a red
and white striped bandana.

Baby Leaper is green with yellow hair and frog symbol. He has
purple eyes. He came with a pink

Princess Brush 'n Grow Ponies (growing tail and jeweled forehead)
Click here to see the Princess Brush 'n Grow Ponies mint in the original packages!
Princess Brush 'n Grow Ponies came after the
original Brush 'n Grow
Ponies. The Princess Brush 'n Grows are much like the originals; the
Brush 'n Grow Ponies have tons of hair. They have extremely long full
manes and full tails. Each tail could be extended and then pulled back
into the body
and extended again. There is a winding mechanism in the body of the
pony that is activated by moving the head back and forth; this is how the tall
gets shorter and longer.
The Princess Brush 'n Grows do have three major differences than the regular Brush 'n Grow Ponies: a jewel in the center of the forehead, tinsel in the mane and tail, and a "striped symbol". The jewels come in either the shape of a teardrop (close up pictured right) or heart.
The similarities that Brush 'n Grow Ponies and Princess Brush 'n Grow Ponies share that other adult sets do not: A moveable head and extremely long hair. They have more hair than any other set of U. S. ponies. The only other pony that has as much hair is Rapunzel, a special Mail Order that is very uncommon.
There are several other sets of Princess Ponies, but none really resemble these. Other Princess Ponies include: Princess Ponies (edition 1), Princess Ponies (edition 2) and Princess Ponies.

Pictured above is Skylark; her hair is extremely long and has
tinsel in it.
These ponies were sold in the U. K.
Brilliant
Bloom (Pegasus) is pale purple with blue, pink, purple hair; she has blue
tinsel in her hair. She has a blue
teardrop jewel
on her forehead and two blue and pink flowers symbol. She is in So Soft
North Star's pose. She had deep blue green eyes; they have a bright
appearance.

Glittering Gem (Pegasus) is pink with white, yellow, pink hair;
she
has red tinsel in her hair. She has a dark pink teardrop jewel
on her forehead and two yellow and dark pink hearts symbol. She is in
Heart Throb's pose. She has maroon eyes; perhaps one of the most odd eye
colors since the brown was not a common color for eyes.

Skylark (earth pony) is green with pink, purple, white hair;
she has
purple tinsel in her hair. She has a purple heart jewel
on her forehead and two pink and purple birds symbol. She is in Quacker's
pose. She has deep purple eyes.

Star Gleamer (earth pony) is blue with yellow, pink hair. She has a pink heart jewel
on her forehead and two yellow and pink stars symbol; she has
pink tinsel in her
hair. She is in Posey's pose. She has pink eyes.
