1980's International My Little Ponies
(K-N)

Kiss Curl and the Grooming Parlour
See Also: Grooming
Parlourfor more information and photos of the actual
playset that came with Kiss Curl.
The Grooming Parlour is basically the same as the Brush
Me Beautiful Boutique, Year 6. It is purple with blue accents and
comes with a white kitty named Snowball. At least two versions were made,
each corresponding to the versions of Kiss Curl below. Accessories should remain
the same for both versions.
These were sold in the U. K. and throughout Europe* (See the main
International page for information on inclusions and exclusions for this).
Thanks to Jennifer Rhinebeck for use of the below photograph.
Kiss Curl (U. K. and
European; version 1) (earth pony) is yellow with pink hair and her
symbol
is pink braids with green ribbon (close up pictured right). She has deep
perwinkle eyes and is in Posey's pose. Oddly, she shares similar body and
hair colors as Posey as well. Her eyes are an odd shade. Her hair may fade to
white over time. She was issued in 1987.

Kiss Curl (U. K. and European; version 2) (earth pony) is yellow with
pink hair
and her symbol is green braids with pink ribbons. She is in Posey's pose;Oddly,
she shares similar body and hair colors as Posey as well. She has
deep perwinkle eyes. Her eyes are an odd shade. Her hair may fade to white
over time. She was probably issued in 1988-9.

Year 7.
Baby Brother Apple Delight (boy) is white with yellow hair with coral
red highlights. His tail color is a mix and his mane color is yellow with a
red stripe. His symbol is red apples and green apple trees. His eyes are
purple and his body is the standard chubby body male style.
The Apple Delight family
in the United States had a daughter; however, in the UK they sold a baby brother
also. He was not available in the U. S. He came with a yellow bowtie.
Thanks to Joanne for use of this photograph.

Baby Brother Bright Bouquet (boy) is lavender with blue hair with
purple highlights and has blue hearts and flowers as his symbol. The Bright
Bouquet family in the United States had a daughter, in the UK they had a son.
He came with a lavender bowtie.
Thanks to Joanne for use of this photograph.

Baby Sweet Celebrations (girl) is blue with pink hair with green highlights
and balloons and gifts as her symbol. The Sweet Celebrations family in
the United States had a son; in the U. K. they had a daughter also.

Lemon Drop and the Show Stable
(second edition)
See Also:
Show
Stable (second edition) for
more information and photos of the actual playset that came with Kiss Curl
The first issue of the Show Stable
(in most places) was basically the same as the one issued in the U. S.
However, there was a second release of the Show Stable Internationally in 1989.
The U. S., 1989 release was different from this one; it is known as Home Sweet
Home. It is basically the same as the early issue except for a few subtle
color changes. You will see brighter colors in the stable, and the pony
issued.
There are also a variety of vanant stables and other International stables.
There are countless versions of Lemondrop. Just a few are listed in the variant
section. There are others in various other country sections as well, like
Macau, for example.
Lemon Drop (earth pony) is yellow with purple
hair and purple drops. Her colors are brighter than U. S. releases.
She has Hong Kong stamped onto the hoof.

While there
were several editions of Megan in the U.
S., there was also a different edition
of Megan sold abroad. She was similar to the first edition of Megan in the
U. S., but she had a completely different outfit. Sundance remained the
same. The outfit she is pictured wearing is the actual U. K. that she
comes with. I've seen this one MOC. Megan and Sundance were
issued in 1986. Sundance has not changed from the U. S. version, as far as
I can tell.
Megan (U. K. and Europe) (earth girl)
is blonde with a white and pink dress. Her dress has a pink bow collar,
sash, and accents. The dress part is more like an apron or skirt, that
detached; She has multi-colored bows (print) on her skirt. She is
wearing pink and white pantaloons or bloomers. She came with pink shoes
(standard Megan shoes) and a puffy sticker. Other versions of UK Megan
came wearing various Megan
and Pony Wear outfits.

Mountain Boy Ponies (all earth ponies)
Click here to see any available photographs of Mint in Package Mountain Boy Ponies.
Big Brother Ponies brought some handsome boy ponies to the
herd; Mountain Boy Ponies are basically the same as Big Brother Ponies. They
are larger than the adult females and all in the same pose: bodies forward,
all four feet equal and straight (some have one hoof slightly tilted).
They had special, distinguishable hooves, each with molded, feathered feet (close
up pictured right). All adult males sold in the U. S. have this feature.
Some have curly hair and some have straight hair, but all have a different color
stripe in the mane. All Big Brothers and male ponies are earth
ponies.
Mountain Boy Ponies have some distinguishing features:
freckles, feather hooves
(see
example above) and a streak in their hair. The Mountain Boy Ponies
are a coveted set of ponies, each being very popular among collectors.
Thanks to Jennifer Rhinebeck for the example photograph on the right.
Big Brother Ponies, Year 5, Big Brother Ponies, Year 6, Loving Family Ponies (U. S. and U. K.) and Family Friends and Family Babies all have male ponies in the same pose as the Big Brother Ponies. Also, Coat 'n Tails shares the same mold, being the only Mail Order with a male pony mold.
These are in the same mold as Big Brother
Ponies. They all have white freckles and a single colored
streak in their hair.
Fireball is dark pink with purple hair with a yellow streak in the mane.
His symbol is an orange and yellow fireball (yellow center; orange outer).

Ice Crystal is pale green with white hair with a green streak and has
blue and white ice crystals as his symbol.

Lightening is orange with yellow hair with a white streak and a white
cloud with a yellow lightening bolt.

Sunburst is yellow with red hair with a golden yellow streak and a golden
sun rising behind a white cloud.

Thundercloud is purple with pink hair with a purple-blue streak, and violet
eyes. His symbol is a white cloud with blue raindrops and a yellow lightening
bolt.

Tornado is blue with pink hair with a blue streak and a white tornado
symbol.

Non-So Soft Ponies (Movie Stars and Pony Friends)
The term Non So Soft Pony is a slang term that was given
to ponies sold Internationally that were once So Soft Ponies in the U. S.
They were sold abroad without the flocking. There are really two different
sets, those sold in the U. K. and Europe and those sold around Sweden.
The U. K. versions are called Movie Stars and were from other miscellaneous
sets; the harder to find Swedish versions are called Pony Friends.
Movie
Stars
Click here to see any available photographs of Mint in Package Non So Soft Ponies
The non were launched in the U. K. as the Movie Star Ponies in 1987 (I'm assuming that's when the Movie came to the U. K.). I've seen variation other cards, and all cards seem to translate to Movie Stars as well. The card that the ponies came on (a picture can be seen by clicking the above link) featured a scene related to the movie. Not all of the Non So Softs were released in the same area. In Sweden, they cards read Pony Friends.
U. K. and other European Releases:
Buttons (unicorn) is lavender with blue hair with a dark pink streak
in her mane. Her symbol
is five pink buttons and four blue stars. She has blue eyes (matching her hair),
and she stands in Galaxy's pose. This is not really a duplicate of a So Soft
Pony. The U. S. So Soft version only has three buttons (see below). However,
she is a U. K. version of Buttons, so she is often thrown into this category.
She is more commonly found than the three-buttoned version. To see the So Soft
Version, see Year 4.
Buttons [Three-Buttoned Version] (unicorn) is lavender with blue hair
with a dark pink
streak in her mane. Her symbol is three pink buttons (with two buttonholes on
each). She has blue eyes (matching her hair), and she stands in Galaxy's pose.
The three button version was available in Year
4. Her U. S. mold was not flocked and sold in the UK as Non So Soft
Buttons.

Gusty (unicorn) is white with green hair with a red streak in her mane.
Her symbol is five purple leaves. There is U. S. So Soft and regular version.
The regular version is like this one, except she has glittery leaves. There
is also
a U. S. So Soft version of her, Year
4. This is the version upon which she is based. They dropped the flocking
and sold her in the U. K. She has green eyes.
Thanks to Rachel for use of this photograph.

Magic Star (earth Pony) is yellow with green hair and a magic wand with
a green handle, pink
star,
and ribbon. She stands in Cherries Jubilee pose in this version opposed to the
rearing position in America.

Lickety-Split is lavender with pink hair and vanilla ice cream cones.
The regular U. S. version
was sold in Year 3. There is also a U. S. So Soft version of her, Year 4. Her U. S.
mold was not flocked and sold in the UK as Non So Soft Lickety Split.
North Star (Pegasus) is pink with purple hair and a purple and blue compass.
There is also a U. S. So Soft version of her, Year
4. Her U. S. mold was not flocked and sold in the UK as Non So Soft
Northstar.

Posey (UK; Non-So Soft)
(earth pony) is yellow with pink hair and dark pink or
magenta tulips. The U. S. version has bright pink tulips; she is a
Year 3 Earth Pony. There
is also a U. S. So Soft version of her, Year
4. Her U. S. mold was not flocked and sold in the UK as Non So Soft
Posey.

Shady (earth Pony) is dark
pink with chartreuse hair and blue sunglasses. There
is
also
a U. S. So Soft version of her, Year
4. Her U. S. mold was not flocked and sold in the UK as Non So Soft
Shady.
Thanks to Rachel for use of this photograph.

Wind Whistler (Pegasus) is blue with pink hair and blue and pink whistles. There is also a U. S. So Soft version
of her, Year 4. Her U.
S. mold was not flocked and sold in the UK as Non So Soft Wind Whistler.

Pony Friends
The
Pony Friends were sold specifically in Sweden and possibly other areas; they
were not, however, sold in the U. K. They are much less widespread than
the Movie Stars set. Sold in this set were Shady, Posey, Wind Whistler and
Cherries Jubilee, which were also sold in the U. K. In addition, Truly,
Cupcake and Fifi were also sold. I am having trouble placing Fifi's
country of origin, but I am fairly sure she was sold in Sweden. You will
most likely hear these referred to as Non So Soft Ponies.
A huge thanks to Inger and Monika for use
of the photograph below, please visit their site, Sunlark's
Home Page. Thanks to Phoebe for use of the card above, all copyright's
belong to her.
Cupcake (earth pony)
is white with blue hair and cupcakes symbol. There is also a U. S. So Soft
version of her, Year
4. She has purple eyes.
Fifi (unicorn) is blue with white hair and a pink streak with three pink
poodles for her symbol. There is also a U. S. So Soft version of her, Year
4. I've seen occurrences of her near Sweden, but she is not pictured
on the back card with Truly and Cupcake. She could still be from the same
set, perhaps a later released.
Truly (earth pony) is white with dark pink hair and a dove
symbol. She has blue eyes and is the rearing pose. There is also a
U. S. So Soft version of her in, Year
4. After the discovery of Brazilian
Truly, the fable of the NSS Truly disappeared for a time. The
Brazilian Truly is in Skydancer's pose, not the rearing pose. Phoebe sent
me a back card that shows that she was actually a NSS pony.
