My Little Ponies and Friends (U.S.)
Year 6 Accessories (1987)

Year six was a grand year of second edition ponies.  The Twice as Fancy Ponies came back with more innovative symbols, including Munchy's Hot Dogs, Hamburgers, and Pickles. Three new Big Brothers were released much like those previous, no radical differences.  The new Princess Ponies come out with more radical colors and tinsel forelocks.  Also there is a new edition of Newborn Twins.

Not all ponies were second editions though, Year six is the year of issue for the well beloved Summerwing Ponies.  Much more sturdy than flutters and with bright butterfly wings, these ponies were an instant success.  Also Hasbro came up with the idea of Pony Friends, new animal friends for all the ponies in Ponyland.

This year is also the beginning of many new ponies up on the high end of 1980's technology.  Brush 'n Grow (hair really grows), Peek-a-Boo (head really moves), Sweetberry (smells sweet), Sundae Best (smells sweet), Watercolor Baby Sea Ponies (change color), Magic Message (symbols reveal a special hidden symbol underneath), and Happy Tails Ponies (tails swirl and twirl) all have unique abilities that set them apart from Year 5 Ponies.  These "do something" ponies will become the norm for years to come.

Also Mummy Charms were sold with specially marked packages.  Each tiny charm came in different colors and with different symbols, just like actual ponies.

Brush Me Beautiful Boutique

The Brush Me Beautiful Boutique is another one of the four U. S. beauty related parlors.  The Poof 'n Puff Perfume Palace also came out in Year 6.  There was also the Pretty Parlor and the Perm Shoppe.    The Boutique is in the same mold as the Pretty Parlor, and is really just an alternate of it.  It comes with basically the same accessories, just in different colors.  It does not come with any ponies, just the kitty.

The Brush Me Beautiful Boutique is a purple rectangular Boutique with an aqua blue door, base, and hangers.  It has a reflective paper, a "mirror" so you ponies can see how they look.   It comes with hats, brushes, ribbons,  and place cards.  It also comes with tack items, even though it doesn't come with ponies: bridle, reins, saddle, saddle blanket, and a pink basket for Catnip to ride in.

Catnip
(kitty) is white with mint green eyes and green whiskers and green stripes.  She is in the same mold as the first kitty Twinkles.  In the U. K., Catnip was called Snowball and was sold with the the Grooming Parlor.

Both of the terms Mummy and Mommy charms are acceptable.  Hasbro used both terms.  Why, I'm not exactly sure.  The Mommy Charms were available in select packages with ponies.  I have included them both in the pony and accessories list.  A special bracelet was also available by Mail Order, it was specifically for the Mummy Charms

Poof 'n Puff Perfume Palace

The Poof 'n Puff Perfume Palace is the pink perfume pretty up place.  It is clear pink plastic and is shaped like a perfume bottle.  It has a blue atomizer on the top that really sprays perfume (or a sweet perfume like smell) and a blue base.  The smell reminds me of Perfume Puff Ponies.  It had the My Little Pony Logo and the Poof 'n Puff Perfume Palace logo at the top of the structure.  It has a tulip window, blue tulip doorknob, and embossed hearts decorating the encasement.  Also included is a mirror background built into the palace, not a real mirror but reflective paper.

The Poof 'n Puff Perfume Palace became one of four U. S. My Little Pony beauty related parlors, but it is the only one with real perfume.  The Perm Shoppe came out in Year 5, whicpoofpuffhall1.jpg (20165 bytes)h was a place for ponies to get all dressed up.  There was also the Pretty Parlor and the Brush Me Beautiful Boutique.

Note the photograph below shows how the Palace opens out.  The entire front portion opens and lays horizontally.  You can store all your accessories from the Poof 'n Puff Perfume Palace inside.

The Perfume Palace did not come with any ponies, which was a going trend for all Year 6 items.  The accessories that came with the Perfume Palace were bright in comparison to the actual Palace structure.  It's largest accessory is a pastel blue dresser with drawers that really open.  All the other items could be placed inside the Perfume Palace.  Also it came with a purple boa, a boa similar only to the ones issued to Dance 'n Prance Ponies.  Also, the hair clips and barrettes were similar to some of those sold with the Pretty Ups.   The lipstick and nail polish is also included with Pony Make Up, which came with specially marked ponies. The hat was similar to those issued with different Pretty Parlors (though it has unique colors).

Thanks to Tom and Michelle Hall for use of these photographs.

Pretty-Ups

For additional information and close up photographs of the barrettes, clips and brushes that came with these sets see Pretty Ups Mint in Package.

After Year 5, Pony Wear did not return. In fact, Pretty-Ups were the only singly packaged fashion-related sets to be produced. Despite the lonely year of single pony fashions, two fashion related playsets were issued. The Brush Me Beautiful Boutique and the Poof 'n Puff Perfume Parlor were the only playsets offered this year. Each had unique bows and ribbons, and many that came with the Perfume Parlor were similar to the Pretty-Ups.

Each set has a theme, which will be better explained in the individual sections below. Pretty-Ups came with four miscellaneous barrettes (two small and two large), two hair picks with false hair, a bow clip with false hair, ribbon, and comb.  Combs were the standard combs that came with various ponies, the ribbons were also standard. Some of the accessories, though, came with very few issue of ponies, if any. Some of these accessories are unique only to Pretty-Ups sets.
